FAQ

What is Epsom salt and where did it get its name?

Epsom salt is an age-old mineral remedy widely used over the past generations. The vast benefits have been passed on by word-of-mouth through grandmothers and sports trainers, used as a "cure-all" for various ailments on a regular basis. Used primarily as a soaking aid for soothing aches, sore joints and bruises, it is also used in foot baths, and for gardening.

Epsom salt got its name from Epsom, England, where one of the earliest discoveries of magnesium sulfate was made in the late 16th century. Named for the mineral waters found in Epsom, people soon learned of the healing benefits obtained by soaking in or applying the mineral waters. They often traveled long distances hoping to be cured of health ailments. This mineral was determined to be magnesium sulfate, and because of the similar appearance to coarse table salt, was named Epsom salt although completely different than common salt, which is sodium chloride. Magnesium Sulfate, the scientific name for Epsom salt, is known to enhance the functions of the human body in a multitude of ways.
